“Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.” This is a quote from the seminal figure of the Protestant Reformation, the priest and theologian Martin Luther. He went on to say, “my heart, which is so full to overflowing, has often been solaced and refreshed by music when sick and weary.”

Although I love poetry, I know that not everyone has the same taste for it. I taught high school English for three years so I know this through experience! However, I love puzzling out the meaning from the metaphors. I love the rhythm and the alliterations. But most of all, poetry requires my full attention and gives me a gift. I see things in new ways. I am delighted by imagination.

When I tell people I am a spiritual director, they often ask me what is meant by that? You can find various definitions of it, but they all contain the idea that spiritual direction is a practice with the involvement of a director, a directee in the presence of God.

We live in an anxious age and active age. Our phones have often become our closest companion and screens are ever present. Silence and stillness are often avoided. So many voices demand our attention to the point that we feel we are losing ourselves.
